Social networks are a simple springboard to be able to carry out defamation actions, harming people’s right to honor and image.

They usually try to damage the reputation and image of people using fake accounts, this being the most used method. The person who intends to insult or slander another feels more protected by making use of anonymity to publish their comments and undermine the public image of the victim in question.

Defamation directed at public or well-known persons is common, but it can also be directed at “anonymous” or private persons. In some cases, defamatory actions can turn into bullying, usually when the defamator (in many cases called a hater) systematically insults his victim and even turns others against him.

Defamation on social networks occurs when someone insults another person or shares false information about it, knowing that it is not true. It is here when we talk about the crimes of libel and slander, typified in articles 208 and 205 of the Penal Code.
